High Resolution Scanning

It's important, when scanning your photographs, that you understand the concept of resolution. The element of image resolution can often make the difference between a quality photographic print and a poor print. When you scan an image, usually your scanner's default is to use 72 dots per square inch. There is, relatively speaking, not a great deal of depth or detail with an image scanned at this resolution. All web graphics that you see displaying on HTML pages appear at this resolution, but often don't look very nice after they're printed. Some scanners will set your default resolution to 150 pixels per square inch. This will often provide a much more detailed image, but still lends room for improvement when you're dealing in terms of a printed photograph. 300 DPI, or dots per inch, is the standard resolution for printing artwork. This is what most publications use as their standard.When scanning an image at a certain size, you can set the resolution to your desired number and capture your scan at those settings.
